The life of a visual merchandiser

Being a Visual Merchandiser is as chaotic as fulfilling.

Why?

It means that every morning the alarm rings, time for a quick shower and a healthy but filling breakfast to start the day in the best mood. That’s because when you have to stay up all day long, you need to get all the energy you possibly can starting from the very beginning.

As soon as your body is physically and mentally awake, it’s time to check the emails to certify if something unexpected needs to be done in a hurry, or if the plans scheduled before are still good.

Something that not always happens.

That’s the thing, this job is a multifaceted job: 30% is office, 20% is travel and 50% is working in the field, that can be a store, a show room, a line meeting, a fashion show, an event…

Everything, of course, starts in the office, is both the heart and brain of our work: is where we have meeting with the whole team, creative briefs, brainstorming and most of all, where projects come to life, or, as we like to call it, is where we turn our client’s ideas and souls into visual stories and experiences.

It could sound easy and fast, but is not.

You can easily be in the office planning and designing a new project based in London in the morning and take a flight at 2.15 pm to go to New York to set up the new fall winter campaign you have been working on for months.

This is another big part of our job, which is also the most exciting one: the privilege of travel, of travel a lot, and learn even more.

Working abroad is always an enrichment, personal as well as professional. It means new places to visit, unknown cultures, customs and tradition to discover, but also the chance to know what is happening in our sector in real time and to operate inside of it with the wider and most comprehensive vision possible.

Because of the nature of our job, cooperate and coordinate with a vast number of different specialists, such as Retail, Commercial and Store Managers, Architects, Buyers, Suppliers and more, is a commonplace.

How to do that?

It’s all about being multitasking, well organized, flexible and good at lateral thinking.
